Make Your Own Resurrection Eggs

This is a re-post from last year, but definitely worth repeating!
Happy Easter!
*****

You may have seen sets of Resurrection Eggs at the store. They are sets, usually of a dozen eggs, that have inside each egg a symbol of the Easter story. There are scriptures to go with each, too. They are a wonderful, visual way to teach your children the story of Christ's death and resurrection. I've been wanting to get a set for over a year now, but just haven't gotten around to it. Then, of course, we've been tightening the budget lately and I just couldn't justify buying a set for $10, when I could just read them the story from their books.

But then I saw some great ideas online for making your own set. Each site that I looked at varied just a little, but the concept was the same. Vince and I looked over several and chose the symbols we wanted to incorporate and made our own set. It was really very easy~and we didn't buy a thing! I've already mentioned how many plastic eggs we have around the house and I simply saved the egg carton from the grocery trip this past week to put them in. Then we got busy making the symbols.

I've shown how we made the symbols in italics.

1. Bread (we used a cracker) Matthew 26:26
While they were eating Jesus took a piece of bread,
gave a prayer of thanks, broke it, and gave it to His disciples.
"Take and eat it," He said, "This is my body."

2. Coins (we used 3 dimes) Matthew 26: 14-15
Then, one of the twelve disciples, named Judas Iscariot, went to
the chief priests and asked, "What will you give me if I betray
Jesus to you?" They counted out thirty silver coins and gave
them to him.

3. Purple cloth (I used a piece of ribbon) Mark 15:17
And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns,
and put it about his head,

4. Thorns (Vince crafted a crown from branches from a thorny bush in our yard) Matthew 27:29
Then they made a crown out of thorny branches and placed it on
His head, and put a stick on His right hand; then they knelt
before Him and made fun of Him. "Long live the King, of the
Jews!" they said.

5. Scourge/Whip (a strip of leather cut from an old belt) Mark 15:15
Pilate wanted to please the crowd, so he set Barabbas free for
them. Then he had Jesus whipped and handed Him over to be
crucified.

6. Cross (a charm from a broken bracelet) John 19: 17-18a
He went out, carrying His cross, and came to "The Place of the
Skull," as it is called. (In Hebrew it is called "Galgotha.") There
they crucified Him.

7. Nails (3 fat nails hot-glued together) John 20:25b
Thomas said to them, "Unless I see the scars of the nails in His
hands and put my finger on those scars and my hand in His
side, I will not believe."

8. Dice (Vince made these with a tissue and Elmer's glue, let them dry then painted them white with tempura paint and drew the dots on) John 19:23-24 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and played a game to decide who would get his clothes.

9. Sponge (sniped the corner off of one) Matthew 27:48
One of them ran up at once, took a sponge, soaked it in cheap
wine, put it on the end of a stick, and tried to make Him drink it.

10. Spear (Vince made one with a whittled branch and a broken tip of an Exacto knife~he covered the blade with hot glue for safety) John 19:34
One of the soldiers plunged his spear into Jesus' side, and at
once blood and water poured out.

11. Rock (from the yard) Matthew 27:59-60
Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a new linen sheet, and
placed it in his own new tomb, which he had just recently dug
out of solid rock. Then he rolled a large stone across the
entrance to the tomb and went away.

12. Empty Matthew 28:6 He is not here He has risen just as He said

I'm excited to surprise the kiddos with these this morning! This will be a wonderful way to help them visualize what we celebrate each Easter.

We have done resurection eggs for many Easter Sundays. Last year I broke down and bought a set from the christian bookstore. I was missing some pieces from the homemade set. LOL!

Thank you for sharing these lessons in the eggs. I don't really do much shopping or looking around in stores, so I've never seen these. What a powerful message for everyone. May you and your family have a wonderful, blessed Easter. ♥♫

The Making of an Egyptian Death Mask

We are learning all about the ancient world this year with Story of the World I and loving it! We've been learning a lot about Egypt, of course, which is completely fascinating. Most recently we have studied the New Kingdom of Egypt, which includes the story of King Tut. So we decided making an Egyptian death mask in the style of King Tut's would be a fun project. First since it was too cold at the time to paper mache in the garage (it probably would have frozen instead of dried-ha) and it was too messy to do it in the house, we decided to pick up a couple of cheap craft masks at Hobby Lobby. Next we cut out cardboard shapes to complete the shape of the death mask, attaching them with hot glue. Vince even put a little detail on the *beard* with the hot glue per The Princess' request. Then the kiddos started to paint them with this metallic gold tempera paint. It worked okay for the cardboard, but would not coat the plastic of the mask. We thought maybe a second coat

Door Hanger Chore Charts

My kids have had a chore chart for a while.  It's one of those magnetic boards and they share it.  However, it's not by their rooms and often they (and I) forget to update it.  Plus it's a little bulky.   When I saw the concept of a door hanger chore chart on Pinterest, I loved it!  It was compact, right there were the kiddos could see it coming out and going into their rooms, and it costs almost nothing to make.   I headed over to one of my favorite stores: Hobby Lobby, of course.  They  have these little wooden door hangers for .79.  I also grabbed a couple of packets of decorative buttons for $1.99 each.  I already had the clothes pins and the paint so those cost me nothing.   I began by painting the door hangers (I used tempera paints because that's what I had).  Then I grabbed a fine point Sharpie and the clothes pins and started writing chores on them, making sure to write them correctly so they will clip on the right direction.   The left

1st Day Back to {home}School, Among Other Things

We did it! We finally got unpacked enough and got our new learning room organized enough to start back to school! Frankly, I was starting to get worried...ha Today went very well though. So far I am extremely pleased with our new curriculum choices for math and language arts. Now, if I could just actually get some lesson planning done... And get the finishing touches done in the learning room, so I can blog it! In other news, it has been a bit of a traumatic week...pet-wise. Last weekend a sweet friend (who had asked my permission beforehand) brought the kiddos their very own little fish tank with two goldfish. Well, on Sunday we noticed that The Princess' fish was pretty lethargic...dead, actually. She was sad, but she handled it fairly well. And we went to the store that evening and let her pick out a new goldfish. Well, today during our school time~the fish tank is in our learning room~we noticed Mr. B's fish was acting funny. And then he was dead. It was a
