Freezer Cooking, Laundry Soap and LOST

As you can tell from the title of this post I've been a little busy. This has already been one full week. I feel like I'm still playing catch-up from those snow days. It's unbelievable how much laundry piles up from playing in the snow. I'm really looking forward to my date with my hubby this Friday night.

One thing that I've been working on is some freezer cooking. Not for myself~although I would really like to do more of that. The meals that I'm freezing right now though are for my sister-in-law. In a little over a week she is having some major surgery and will be recuperating for about a month. She and her husband have a sweet one-year-old son, so this will be a challenging time for them. Even though they live a couple of hours away, I am trying to do what I can to help them during this time. I plan to go over to help out when I'm able, but I thought the best way I could help was to stock their freezer as best as I can. So each night that I make a casserole, I bake half for us and put half in the freezer. It's working out great! If you've got any great freezer meals that I should know about, definitely leave me a comment.

Also on my agenda this week was making my first batch of homemade laundry soap. I got it done tonight and it's doing it's 24-hour thing. I'll find out then if I did it right:) I'm sure I'll be blogging about that soon.

But for tonight I am enjoying watching the beginning of the last season of LOST. Yes, my husband and I are big fans!! I can't believe this is the last season~they have a lot of questions to answer before the big finale. Are you a fan of LOST? Are all these unanswered questions driving you crazy, too?

That's a great way to do the freezer cooking. It's easy to cook a double portion and freeze half. Much simpler than spending 8 hours in one day cooking, in my opinion. My family needs to do some big grocery shopping next week. After we are well stocked again, I hope to start cooking double batches and freezing casseroles again.

Oh, and yes- we like to watch Lost. We've found inspiration for one of our baby's names from that show.

I have to watch Lost, even though I gave up trying to figure it out long ago.

I've never seen Lost. I can't wait to hear about your laundry soap though. As far as the freezer cooking, I do batches of meat, but as far as meals, I've tried that, but I'm so bad about not taking it out to thaw, or when I cook it frozen it always takes longer than it's supposed to so it's never done on time and the kids are starving, or when I do thaw it, it doesn't thaw evenly so it doesn't cook timely. That was certainly a run-on sentence. Suffice to say that freezer cooking hasn't been my friend for meals very often, but for cooking meat ahead of time, chopping veggies and fruits and freezing them it's great.

Okay, I'm done now!

Can't wait to hear about the laundry soap. I tried to make my own dishwasher detergent, but it really didn't work. Oh well.

The Making of an Egyptian Death Mask

We are learning all about the ancient world this year with Story of the World I and loving it! We've been learning a lot about Egypt, of course, which is completely fascinating. Most recently we have studied the New Kingdom of Egypt, which includes the story of King Tut. So we decided making an Egyptian death mask in the style of King Tut's would be a fun project. First since it was too cold at the time to paper mache in the garage (it probably would have frozen instead of dried-ha) and it was too messy to do it in the house, we decided to pick up a couple of cheap craft masks at Hobby Lobby. Next we cut out cardboard shapes to complete the shape of the death mask, attaching them with hot glue. Vince even put a little detail on the *beard* with the hot glue per The Princess' request. Then the kiddos started to paint them with this metallic gold tempera paint. It worked okay for the cardboard, but would not coat the plastic of the mask. We thought maybe a second coat

Door Hanger Chore Charts

My kids have had a chore chart for a while.  It's one of those magnetic boards and they share it.  However, it's not by their rooms and often they (and I) forget to update it.  Plus it's a little bulky.   When I saw the concept of a door hanger chore chart on Pinterest, I loved it!  It was compact, right there were the kiddos could see it coming out and going into their rooms, and it costs almost nothing to make.   I headed over to one of my favorite stores: Hobby Lobby, of course.  They  have these little wooden door hangers for .79.  I also grabbed a couple of packets of decorative buttons for $1.99 each.  I already had the clothes pins and the paint so those cost me nothing.   I began by painting the door hangers (I used tempera paints because that's what I had).  Then I grabbed a fine point Sharpie and the clothes pins and started writing chores on them, making sure to write them correctly so they will clip on the right direction.   The left

1st Day Back to {home}School, Among Other Things

We did it! We finally got unpacked enough and got our new learning room organized enough to start back to school! Frankly, I was starting to get worried...ha Today went very well though. So far I am extremely pleased with our new curriculum choices for math and language arts. Now, if I could just actually get some lesson planning done... And get the finishing touches done in the learning room, so I can blog it! In other news, it has been a bit of a traumatic week...pet-wise. Last weekend a sweet friend (who had asked my permission beforehand) brought the kiddos their very own little fish tank with two goldfish. Well, on Sunday we noticed that The Princess' fish was pretty lethargic...dead, actually. She was sad, but she handled it fairly well. And we went to the store that evening and let her pick out a new goldfish. Well, today during our school time~the fish tank is in our learning room~we noticed Mr. B's fish was acting funny. And then he was dead. It was a
