The Weekly Wrap-Up: Cooking Shows, St. Patty's Day and Alka-Seltzer

This week kicked off with some educational fun in the kitchen. Our family enjoys watching the Food Network~especially shows like Cupcake Wars, Chopped and Iron Chef America. So my kids are totally into the whole idea of competition and judging.

Sunday night they decided to create their own *dishes*. It was so fun watching them get creative and come up with their own things. It was also great to watch them help each other and work together in the kitchen. We don't always see teamwork between them at these ages.

Mr. B's creation: BBQ potato chips with banana slices topped with hot dog slices with grape tomatoes on the side.

One of The Princess' creations: chocolate covered banana slices. These were actually pretty yummy! They completely ate whatever they made though~even if it was *weird*:)

On Monday morning they were still inspired so they made breakfast for everyone. I was asked to be the sous chef, so I got to be right in on all of the action. Mr. B created the smiley face waffles and The Princess topped Special K fruit crisps with whipped cream and fruit. Not the healthiest, I know, but it was a wonderful learning experience for them. I like to see them coming up with their own ideas.

Monday also brought Mr. B to a fun little story in his reader about a girl who made funny masks out of paper bags. So we decided to make some, too.

Not really sure why Mr. B chose to make his with cavity-filled fangs, it must be a *boy* thing:)
I thought it was hilarious, to say the least!

The Princess' creation had to have eyelashes. Eyelashes are very big with girls, you know! And lips, too, apparently:)

Monday evening was The Princess' monthly Girl Scout meeting and they had fun learning about music. They made *box guitars*, played on instruments, sang...it was a very fun night.

I am really enjoying her participation in Scouts. She has a wonderful troop and we are blessed to be a part!

Tuesday was a typical (whatever that is) day of school for us. Right now that's not all that great. I am just biding my time until we are settled into our own space again and have all of our supplies, etc. There are just so many distractions at the moment that I chose my battles wisely and have decided not to become stressed about it.

Tuesday evening brought the start of The Princess' birthday celebration. Her birthday isn't until next week, but this was the only night that all of my family would be able to get together for several weeks. Of course, The Princess didn't mind opening a few gifts early.

Wednesday brought another day at home. It was a fairly productive day. Vince and I even got our taxes done!

Thursday was St. Patrick's Day and that brought a lot of fun with it. You can read about our day here and here.

Friday was a little bit different of a schedule since we didn't have co-op this week. I decided to not do all of the usual subjects and just focus on one chapter in our science. So we learned about Saturn all day. It was so interesting! We love our Apologia!

Our experiment was to make a *rocket* take off using warm water and Alka-Seltzer. After a couple or five fails we decided to ditch the paper rocket and just focus on the film canister filled with the chemical solution. Success!! I thought I'd share a couple of the short videos I took:

Making the film canister pop:

Seeing who can hold fizzing Alka-Seltzer the longest in their mouth:

And that's a wrap...

I hope you had a great week, too! Enjoy the weekend!

Looks like a great week. My favorite is the fruit and marshmellow rainbow! And yah, for letting your kids get in the kitchen and do their own thing. It will pay off in the future when they can cook supper for the family.

The Making of an Egyptian Death Mask

We are learning all about the ancient world this year with Story of the World I and loving it! We've been learning a lot about Egypt, of course, which is completely fascinating. Most recently we have studied the New Kingdom of Egypt, which includes the story of King Tut. So we decided making an Egyptian death mask in the style of King Tut's would be a fun project. First since it was too cold at the time to paper mache in the garage (it probably would have frozen instead of dried-ha) and it was too messy to do it in the house, we decided to pick up a couple of cheap craft masks at Hobby Lobby. Next we cut out cardboard shapes to complete the shape of the death mask, attaching them with hot glue. Vince even put a little detail on the *beard* with the hot glue per The Princess' request. Then the kiddos started to paint them with this metallic gold tempera paint. It worked okay for the cardboard, but would not coat the plastic of the mask. We thought maybe a second coat

Door Hanger Chore Charts

My kids have had a chore chart for a while.  It's one of those magnetic boards and they share it.  However, it's not by their rooms and often they (and I) forget to update it.  Plus it's a little bulky.   When I saw the concept of a door hanger chore chart on Pinterest, I loved it!  It was compact, right there were the kiddos could see it coming out and going into their rooms, and it costs almost nothing to make.   I headed over to one of my favorite stores: Hobby Lobby, of course.  They  have these little wooden door hangers for .79.  I also grabbed a couple of packets of decorative buttons for $1.99 each.  I already had the clothes pins and the paint so those cost me nothing.   I began by painting the door hangers (I used tempera paints because that's what I had).  Then I grabbed a fine point Sharpie and the clothes pins and started writing chores on them, making sure to write them correctly so they will clip on the right direction.   The left

1st Day Back to {home}School, Among Other Things

We did it! We finally got unpacked enough and got our new learning room organized enough to start back to school! Frankly, I was starting to get worried...ha Today went very well though. So far I am extremely pleased with our new curriculum choices for math and language arts. Now, if I could just actually get some lesson planning done... And get the finishing touches done in the learning room, so I can blog it! In other news, it has been a bit of a traumatic week...pet-wise. Last weekend a sweet friend (who had asked my permission beforehand) brought the kiddos their very own little fish tank with two goldfish. Well, on Sunday we noticed that The Princess' fish was pretty lethargic...dead, actually. She was sad, but she handled it fairly well. And we went to the store that evening and let her pick out a new goldfish. Well, today during our school time~the fish tank is in our learning room~we noticed Mr. B's fish was acting funny. And then he was dead. It was a
