The Weekly Wrap-Up: Cooking, Art & the Pumpkin Patch

Wow! What a fun and full week around here! I'm a little exhausted from it all, but it's been great.

We only spent two days doing school book work this week, but we enjoyed some wonderful field trips and I think those are just as educational as the book work.

On Monday we headed to Nashville and our very first stop was McKay Books. It's only the most awesome used book store I've ever been to! I confess that I love, love, love a good used book store because that means I can buy even more books since the prices are so great. McKay's was no exception and I hope to visit there again soon!

One book that we picked up was a children's cookbook for Mr. B. He couldn't wait to make something from it! So one day this week he and The Princess whipped up a batch of *Fruit on a Stick*and then promptly gobbled them up! I got to sneak one of them and they were really good, of course:) He was pretty proud of himself, making his first *recipe* from his very own cookbook.
Speaking of cooking, The Princess made her first batch of chili for our small group night this week and it was YUM-O! I was pretty impressed! She used a children's cookbook that was one of mine growing up--definitely going to bookmark that recipe to use again:)

Now back to Nashville...

We also visited the Frist Center for the Visual Arts and had an AWESOME time! You may have already seen my post on that so I won't go into all of the details now, but you can read all about it here.
This is a sampling of the art that we made in the ArtQuest part of the Frist during our visit. Can't wait to go back!


We wrapped up our week with a field trip with our homeschool group to a local farm for a visit to the pumpkin patch. It was so much fun! I do believe this farm is the best one we've visited and I can't wait to return (I guess I'm a country girl at heart).

The owner gave the kids and families (our group was 90 strong!) a wonderful talk on how the pumpkin grows and then also related the carving of a jack-o-lantern to how Christ comes into our lives and makes our hearts clean and brings joy. It was a great presentation!

Then the farm fun began! The kiddos got to shell corn and feed the cows, play on a jungle gym made from hay bales, play in the sunflower patch, race {extra large} trikes, pet the goats, see pigs, horses and chickens, play with kittens...

...take a *train* ride on a riding lawn mower, take a wagon ride behind a tractor out to the corn maze, and pick their very own pumpkin straight from the pumpkin patch.

We also enjoyed picnicking, the play ground, some basketball (Vince, not me) and browsing their country store. And the weather... well, it was just the perfect Fall day!

I love this time of the year! It's so nice to do those outdoor things in the perfect temperatures. And Kentucky is just gorgeous right now! The trees are so colorful and the leaves look so pretty floating through the air and resting on the ground. My favorite time of year!

I guess that wraps up our week. I am trying to decide which week to take a bit of a Fall break this year. My calendar is just crazy right now! If you homeschool, do you take a Fall break--or if your children attend a school, does it schedule Fall break? I think I could use one:)

Lora, what a wonderful week! I love this time of year, too. Nice, lovely days and cool evenings: what's not to love?! To answer your question, we homeschool and do not take a fall break, unless you count the few days at Thanksgiving. We start our year later than the ps do in our county, but we like to finish up around the same time, so I'm careful about our breaks and holidays.

We do take a fall break because I still have two children in public school and they are out. We have three days off: Thursday and Friday this upcoming week and the following Monday. I didn't really feel like we needed a break ... until this weekend. All-of-a-sudden I have hit a brick wall and I am so thankful we have a short week this week for a little breather. Besides, the weather is just so beautiful that all I want to do is enjoy it!!!

The Making of an Egyptian Death Mask

We are learning all about the ancient world this year with Story of the World I and loving it! We've been learning a lot about Egypt, of course, which is completely fascinating. Most recently we have studied the New Kingdom of Egypt, which includes the story of King Tut. So we decided making an Egyptian death mask in the style of King Tut's would be a fun project. First since it was too cold at the time to paper mache in the garage (it probably would have frozen instead of dried-ha) and it was too messy to do it in the house, we decided to pick up a couple of cheap craft masks at Hobby Lobby. Next we cut out cardboard shapes to complete the shape of the death mask, attaching them with hot glue. Vince even put a little detail on the *beard* with the hot glue per The Princess' request. Then the kiddos started to paint them with this metallic gold tempera paint. It worked okay for the cardboard, but would not coat the plastic of the mask. We thought maybe a second coat

1st Day Back to {home}School, Among Other Things

We did it! We finally got unpacked enough and got our new learning room organized enough to start back to school! Frankly, I was starting to get worried...ha Today went very well though. So far I am extremely pleased with our new curriculum choices for math and language arts. Now, if I could just actually get some lesson planning done... And get the finishing touches done in the learning room, so I can blog it! In other news, it has been a bit of a traumatic week...pet-wise. Last weekend a sweet friend (who had asked my permission beforehand) brought the kiddos their very own little fish tank with two goldfish. Well, on Sunday we noticed that The Princess' fish was pretty lethargic...dead, actually. She was sad, but she handled it fairly well. And we went to the store that evening and let her pick out a new goldfish. Well, today during our school time~the fish tank is in our learning room~we noticed Mr. B's fish was acting funny. Door Hanger Chore Charts

My kids have had a chore chart for a while.  It's one of those magnetic boards and they share it.  However, it's not by their rooms and often they (and I) forget to update it.  Plus it's a little bulky.   When I saw the concept of a door hanger chore chart on Pinterest, I loved it!  It was compact, right there were the kiddos could see it coming out and going into their rooms, and it costs almost nothing to make.   I headed over to one of my favorite stores: Hobby Lobby, of course.  They  have these little wooden door hangers for .79.  I also grabbed a couple of packets of decorative buttons for $1.99 each.  I already had the clothes pins and the paint so those cost me nothing.   I began by painting the door hangers (I used tempera paints because that's what I had).  Then I grabbed a fine point Sharpie and the clothes pins and started writing chores on them, making sure to write them correctly so they will clip on the right direction.   The left
