My Gluten-Free Experiment

Just a little note: I have recently created a Facebook page for my blog and I would so appreciate it if you would click over using this link or the box to your top right and *like* my page!  Thank you so much!

I am feeling overwhelmed.  I have recently made the decision to try going gluten-free with my son.  He has not been diagnosed with anything and I certainly don't believe he has Celiac disease, but there are some things that have led me to believe he may have an intolerance for gluten.  So...we're trying it.

And I hardly know where to begin.  But here I go anyway!

I do have some friends and family who have gone gluten-free and, believe me, I have been pestering them with lots of questions!  They are being very gracious and helpful to me and I SO appreciate it!

I would say that I am a total foodie and have a pretty good knowledge of food products, but when it comes to gluten-free foods I am just at a loss.  So I'm definitely in research mode.

I know that focusing on proteins, fruits and veggies is the best way to go, but we do need some carbs in there, too.  And my son is a complete PB&J junkie!  So right now I'm on a quest for good, gluten-free sandwich bread (is there such a thing?!) that doesn't cost me an arm and a leg.  And I'm trying to figure out all of this strange-to-me ingredients ...like xanthym gum, for instance.

I've considered doing this for a while, but it just seemed so ...overwhelming!  But I've decided to give it a chance right now while I'm not up to my ears in full-time homeschooling.  Feel free to shoot me your suggestions.

If you've gone gluten-free I'd love to hear about your fave recipes or websites, etc.  Just leave me your comments and links!  And *thanks* in advance :)

We are trying the GAPs diet which is also gluten-free. I'm overwhelmed too, so is my hubby . Changes are always hard. Be courageous!

I know we need to go gluten free. I so think it would help my son. But it is so difficult since we make all our own bread and it is a staple for us.

I think it is also easy to get caught up in buying a lot of gluten free products which are expensive. I am trying to get my son hooked on garden veggies.

Thanks for this post. I look forward to seeing how you do. I liked you on FB. Please like me back if you can: http://www.facebook.com/ModestMamaCreations

Seeing those who have been successful with this is encouraging.
Sherrie,
I haven't heard of the GAP diet. I hope it's going well for you though! And, yes, changes are hard:)
Modest Mama,
Thank you for dropping by and also for liking my FB page! I just found yours and liked it, too:)

Lora,

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

My sister has had some gluten issues in the past. Her biggest issue was desserts. Here is our favorite recipe (off the top of my head!)

Peanut Butter Cookies
1 cup peanut butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla

That's it! Bake at 350. I can't remember how long they cook....sorry. Probably about 8-10 minutes?

You can make cookies or use this recipe as a crust for cheesecake. Our favorite cheesecake was this peanut butter crust and we sprinkled chocolate chips in the cheesecake mixture. Yum!

I've heard about a lot of people going gf, but I personally don't know anything about it. There are plenty of recipes around the web though. I love trying new recipes! Good luck to you! I hope it helps your son greatly.

The Making of an Egyptian Death Mask

We are learning all about the ancient world this year with Story of the World I and loving it! We've been learning a lot about Egypt, of course, which is completely fascinating. Most recently we have studied the New Kingdom of Egypt, which includes the story of King Tut. So we decided making an Egyptian death mask in the style of King Tut's would be a fun project. First since it was too cold at the time to paper mache in the garage (it probably would have frozen instead of dried-ha) and it was too messy to do it in the house, we decided to pick up a couple of cheap craft masks at Hobby Lobby. Next we cut out cardboard shapes to complete the shape of the death mask, attaching them with hot glue. Vince even put a little detail on the *beard* with the hot glue per The Princess' request. Then the kiddos started to paint them with this metallic gold tempera paint. It worked okay for the cardboard, but would not coat the plastic of the mask. We thought maybe a second coat

1st Day Back to {home}School, Among Other Things

We did it! We finally got unpacked enough and got our new learning room organized enough to start back to school! Frankly, I was starting to get worried...ha Today went very well though. So far I am extremely pleased with our new curriculum choices for math and language arts. Now, if I could just actually get some lesson planning done... And get the finishing touches done in the learning room, so I can blog it! In other news, it has been a bit of a traumatic week...pet-wise. Last weekend a sweet friend (who had asked my permission beforehand) brought the kiddos their very own little fish tank with two goldfish. Well, on Sunday we noticed that The Princess' fish was pretty lethargic...dead, actually. She was sad, but she handled it fairly well. And we went to the store that evening and let her pick out a new goldfish. Well, today during our school time~the fish tank is in our learning room~we noticed Mr. B's fish was acting funny. And then he was dead. It was a

Door Hanger Chore Charts

My kids have had a chore chart for a while.  It's one of those magnetic boards and they share it.  However, it's not by their rooms and often they (and I) forget to update it.  Plus it's a little bulky.   When I saw the concept of a door hanger chore chart on Pinterest, I loved it!  It was compact, right there were the kiddos could see it coming out and going into their rooms, and it costs almost nothing to make.   I headed over to one of my favorite stores: Hobby Lobby, of course.  They  have these little wooden door hangers for .79.  I also grabbed a couple of packets of decorative buttons for $1.99 each.  I already had the clothes pins and the paint so those cost me nothing.   I began by painting the door hangers (I used tempera paints because that's what I had).  Then I grabbed a fine point Sharpie and the clothes pins and started writing chores on them, making sure to write them correctly so they will clip on the right direction.   The left
