My Summer Reading List

I feel like I may be a little overly ambitious with all of the books that I've got stacked up around here for summer reading. I find that summer is one of the best times for me to read for pleasure. During the school year I read, but not as much for pleasure because I am so busy with homeschooling. So the summer is when I really indulge, staying up late into the night reading. Reading at night is so relaxing...although I can really read anytime at all.

So here's what I'm reading this summer:
  1. Before Green Gables, by Budge Wilson (currently reading)
  2. The Glass Castle, by Jeanette Walls
  3. A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeline L'Engle
  4. The Red Pony, by John Steinbeck
  5. A Movable Feast, by Ernest Hemingway
  6. Hind's Feet On High Places, by Hannah Hurnard
  7. Mountains of Spices, by Hannah Hurnard
  8. The Well Trained Mind, by Jessie Wise and Susan Wise Bauer
  9. A Thomas Jefferson Education, by Oliver Van DeMille
  10. The House of Winslow Series, by Gilbert Morris (I've read the first 20, now I'm on the next 20!)
This list contains quite the variety: fiction, non-fiction, biography, novel... I'm looking forward to reading all new-to-me stories. I've been shopping at used book sales and used book stores a lot lately and there have been some interesting finds.

I have quite a few more books that I plan to read with my children, but that's another post.

Hey girl! Sorry it's been forever since I stopped by. I'm glad I picked today! I always LOVE seeing what others are reading. Hubby and I were in a bookstore the other day, and I pointed to an entire section and said, "I want to read ALL of these!" I LOVE books. I haven't really made an official list, but these are on my mental list (as well as a waiting list at the library :)):

7 Pillars of Health by Dr. Don Colbert (currently reading)
Stop Acting Like a Christian Just Be One by Christine Caine
The Unhealthy Truth: How Our Food is Making Us sick and What To Do About It by Robyn O'Brien
Have a New Kid by Friday by Dr. Kevin Leman
Going Rogue by Sarah Palin
Creative Correction by Lisa Welchel
And I might actually get around to reading (or listening to) Pride & Prejudice which I downloaded to my i-pod last summer!
Plus...anything else that crosses my path and strikes my fancy!

I loved 7 Pillars of Health~so good and informative. I probably need a refresher on that.
Looks like you've got some more good ones, too! I'm looking forward to reading some authors that I've never read before.

We are similar in that summer is our *reading time*. I love to read out on the porch in the late afternoons. As soon as school is out I start to haunt the library LOL.

I've read a few good books in the last couple of weeks. Girl With a Pearl Earring (Tracy Chevalier), Her Mother's Hope (Francine Rivers) and Made from Scratch (Jenna Woginrich) were my favorites. The first two are fiction. The last is about living a (more) handmade/homemade life.

On my list to read are Devil in the White City (Erik Larson), The Postmistress (Sarah Blake), The Telling (Beverly Lewis), Major Pettigrew's Last Stand (Helen Simonson)...the list goes on LOL.

Let me know what you think of The Red Pony...I've tried to read Grapes of Wrath twice, but put it down both times. Sorry...longest comment ever Ha!

I've never read Steinbeck--or Hemingway for that matter--before so I'm curious to see how I like his writing.

What a list! I don't think I could manage nearly that. On my list is "What Your Kindergartner Needs to Know" for my daughter's charter school! :-) BUT, I recently treated myself to a novel "The Help" which I listened to on CD while working on the computer.

The Reading Game: A Review

I was excited to receive this review product recently, thinking my 1st-grade-son could really benefit and enjoy it a lot. And I was right! He is having so much fun with this game. The Reading Game is a fast-paced memory card game using words. The game comes with 6 sets of memory cards with 6 corresponding readers. The idea is for you and your student to play memory with each set of cards (playing 6 rounds with each set), after every 2 rounds your student then reads 2 test sentences to see how he is retaining the new words he is learning. After the whole set has been played, he is then ready to read the corresponding reader...and has learned 30 new words! By the time your student has played every set of cards and read every reader, he will have learned 180 words. Of the 25 most common English words, 23 are on that list; of the 50 most common words, 42 are on that list. So this little game of reading really does prepare your student well. The Making of an Egyptian Death Mask

We are learning all about the ancient world this year with Story of the World I and loving it! We've been learning a lot about Egypt, of course, which is completely fascinating. Most recently we have studied the New Kingdom of Egypt, which includes the story of King Tut. So we decided making an Egyptian death mask in the style of King Tut's would be a fun project. First since it was too cold at the time to paper mache in the garage (it probably would have frozen instead of dried-ha) and it was too messy to do it in the house, we decided to pick up a couple of cheap craft masks at Hobby Lobby. Next we cut out cardboard shapes to complete the shape of the death mask, attaching them with hot glue. Vince even put a little detail on the *beard* with the hot glue per The Princess' request. Then the kiddos started to paint them with this metallic gold tempera paint. It worked okay for the cardboard, but would not coat the plastic of the mask. We thought maybe a second coat

Door Hanger Chore Charts

My kids have had a chore chart for a while.  It's one of those magnetic boards and they share it.  However, it's not by their rooms and often they (and I) forget to update it.  Plus it's a little bulky.   When I saw the concept of a door hanger chore chart on Pinterest, I loved it!  It was compact, right there were the kiddos could see it coming out and going into their rooms, and it costs almost nothing to make.   I headed over to one of my favorite stores: Hobby Lobby, of course.  They  have these little wooden door hangers for .79.  I also grabbed a couple of packets of decorative buttons for $1.99 each.  I already had the clothes pins and the paint so those cost me nothing.   I began by painting the door hangers (I used tempera paints because that's what I had).  Then I grabbed a fine point Sharpie and the clothes pins and started writing chores on them, making sure to write them correctly so they will clip on the right direction.   The left
