The Weekly Wrap-Up: Reading and Field Tripping

Can you believe how quickly January is flying by?!  Before I know it summertime will be here~crazy!  

We have had a good week of homeschooling this week.  I love it when I can say that!  Not that it hasn't had challenges, but overall it's been very productive.  

Last week I mentioned that my kiddos each received a nabi tablet for Christmas and also personal handheld video games from the grandparents.  We are striving to keep electronic activity at more of a minimum in our home, so of course this presents new challenges in that area.  The kids LOVE their electronic time though, so  we use their time on them to our advantage:)  I've created a reading system for them to earn time on their electronics.  

I made a basket of books with two sections--one for each of them--with books that I want them to read over the course of the next few months along with any other books that they may choose from our home library or the public library.  They must spend at least 30 minutes each day reading in order to have 15 minutes on an electronic device.  They only time they get more minutes on them is 1) if I've assigned them a specific educational activity on the nabi or 2) if we're out and about in the car and I need to keep my sanity (ha!).  So far our system is working well~they kiddos, especially Mr. B have been reading a lot!

We took an impromptu field trip this week that was a lot of fun.  Vince had a lunch meeting with a fellow minister friend in Bowling Green on Thursday and he asked if the kids and I would like to tag along.  After doing a little research on what there was to do in Bowling Green I thought it would be fun to visit the Kentucky Museum on the WKU campus.  So after dropping him off at his meeting, we headed over for some fun on our own.

We had so much fun!  It was definitely worth the visit if you happen to be in the area.  The confederate-era exhibit was by far the favorite of the day.  They had an army tent with the usual things inside that the kids could go in and explore.  The very favorite thing though were the period clothing that they could dress up in! The Princess' eyes totally lit up when she saw the hoop skirt!  Mr. B enjoyed the soldiers' uniforms.  They got right into character and Mr. B even asked The Princess to dance.  

Next we enjoyed looking at the Duncan Hines exhibit.  Who knew Duncan Hines company was based in Bowling Green?!  The exhibit looked very mid-century and was so much fun to browse through.  

Upstairs was a beautiful art gallery with some lovely paintings in their collection.  They also had a nice exhibit downstairs of a local artist.  

The rest of the museum included artifacts from around the world from a donated private collection, a gorgeous vintage quilt exhibit, and a floor of exhibits of famous Americans.  I'm so glad we took the opportunity to go~it was a very good day!

So far this quarter we haven't had time to miss going to co-op:)  I can't believe how full our calendar is!  Frankly, I'm a little exhausted-ha.  But I LOVE field trips and want to take one every chance that we can.
