*Fall Into Reading* {updated}

Well, it's time for Katrina's Fall reading challenge! I had so much fun participating in the Spring challenge that I've really been looking forward to this one. One of the things I most enjoyed was visiting other blogs that were also participating and checking out their reading lists. I'm always looking for the next great book to read and this was a very good way to check out some new or even not-so-new-but-never-read-before books. I also plan to review the books from this list here on my blog as I read them throughout the fall. There's plenty of time if you'd like to join in, check out the details here and here.

My list seems a bit short this time (although there is a 7-book series listed there), but it's going to be a very busy fall. We've just started homeschooling and we are in the process of selling our home and moving, so there's a lot going on around here. But I can always add to my list, right?Right!

  • Total Forgiveness, by R.T. Kendall (currently reading this one)
  • Messy Spirituality, by Michael Yaconelli
  • Stepping Heavenward, by Mrs. E. Prentiss
  • Mount Vernon Love Story, by Mary Higgins Clark
  • A Tale of Three Kings, by Gene Edwards
  • The Russians series (1-7), by Michael Phillips and Judith Pella
  • Finding Your Way, by Tommy Tenny
  • The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd
  • The Visitation, by Frank Peretti
  • To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee

And with The Princess:

  • The Little House on the Prairie Series (we are currently reading The Little House in the Big Woods)
Happy reading!!

I'm totally doing this this time! Hopefully will get a chance to post my list later today...Little Man is waking up right now.

LOVE the Little House series...you should bring The Princess up to the Laura Ingalls Wilder home (it's about an hour SW of here) when you guys get here. There's a museum and everything...I've driven by but not been to visit.

Have you read The Russians series before...it seems like I remember you telling me about it (or another series by the same authors, maybe?)

You will like Mt. Vernon Love Story. It's been awhile since I have read it, but I remember liking it! :)
And the LHOTP books are great classics! Did you know they have a newer series based on these, for the Caroline years, etc? They are good, too!

The Russians series looks really good. It's the only one I've had time to check out so far. All of them look good though. I see The Secret Life of Bees in the store and on best seller lists, so I'm curious to see your review. It was one of the ones that I saw at Sam's and didn't get.

Chatty absolutely LOVES Little House on the Prairie...the shows, the books, the time period...everything. You should look into "A Prairie Primer." I hope I remembered the title correctly off the top of my head. It's a unit study using the Little House books. Might be just your thing.

Super list! Thanks for the note earlier.

The wonderful Little House series. I remember stacking up on them at the library. Those were the good ole days. I hope your daughter enjoys them.
Looks good! You definitely sound busy, but you've got some good books to supplement all your busyness. :)

Thanks for being part of the challenge!

Well, I don't have much to read, outside of school work. I am enjoying Blue Like Jazz, so far and hope to read another book by him. Also hope to read another book by Yaconelli!

The Reading Game: A Review

I was excited to receive this review product recently, thinking my 1st-grade-son could really benefit and enjoy it a lot. And I was right! He is having so much fun with this game. The Reading Game is a fast-paced memory card game using words. The game comes with 6 sets of memory cards with 6 corresponding readers. The idea is for you and your student to play memory with each set of cards (playing 6 rounds with each set), after every 2 rounds your student then reads 2 test sentences to see how he is retaining the new words he is learning. After the whole set has been played, he is then ready to read the corresponding reader...and has learned 30 new words! By the time your student has played every set of cards and read every reader, he will have learned 180 words. Of the 25 most common English words, 23 are on that list; of the 50 most common words, 42 are on that list. So this little game of reading really does prepare your student well. The readers are illustrated with cute

The Making of an Egyptian Death Mask

We are learning all about the ancient world this year with Story of the World I and loving it! We've been learning a lot about Egypt, of course, which is completely fascinating. Most recently we have studied the New Kingdom of Egypt, which includes the story of King Tut. So we decided making an Egyptian death mask in the style of King Tut's would be a fun project. First since it was too cold at the time to paper mache in the garage (it probably would have frozen instead of dried-ha) and it was too messy to do it in the house, we decided to pick up a couple of cheap craft masks at Hobby Lobby. Next we cut out cardboard shapes to complete the shape of the death mask, attaching them with hot glue. Vince even put a little detail on the *beard* with the hot glue per The Princess' request. Then the kiddos started to paint them with this metallic gold tempera paint. It worked okay for the cardboard, but would not coat the plastic of the mask. We thought maybe a second coat

Door Hanger Chore Charts

My kids have had a chore chart for a while.  It's one of those magnetic boards and they share it.  However, it's not by their rooms and often they (and I) forget to update it.  Plus it's a little bulky.   When I saw the concept of a door hanger chore chart on Pinterest, I loved it!  It was compact, right there were the kiddos could see it coming out and going into their rooms, and it costs almost nothing to make.   I headed over to one of my favorite stores: Hobby Lobby, of course.  They  have these little wooden door hangers for .79.  I also grabbed a couple of packets of decorative buttons for $1.99 each.  I already had the clothes pins and the paint so those cost me nothing.   I began by painting the door hangers (I used tempera paints because that's what I had).  Then I grabbed a fine point Sharpie and the clothes pins and started writing chores on them, making sure to write them correctly so they will clip on the right direction.   The left
