April Showers Bring May....Tomatoes and Peppers

I don't know about where you live, but here in the South it has been raining. A lot. And not just here in Alabama~it rained nearly every single day we were in Arkansas, too!

So, needless to say, everything is VERY GREEN everywhere. It does look so pretty, except when you need to mow and it's so soggy that you sink in the lawn! Or when the kids are bouncing off the walls and you really need to send them outside. Immediately.

Oh well, I'm not really complaining because it'll be hot and dry soon and we'll be rationing water. Amazing how fast that can happen.

I was so excited to see how my *patio garden* was doing after being gone for a couple of weeks. Between our friend Britt and all of the rain, they are doing wonderfully! I'm so proud:) I just had to show them off.Look at that tiny little green tomato growing! Isn't it just so cute?! I just love it:)
There are little blooms and even more teeny, tiny green tomatoes growing on all of the plants.

The sweet pepper plants and the jalapenos are loaded with blooms, too. Yea! Can't wait to harvest some of those!

Now, does anyone have any experience in moving with a patio garden?

Beautiful! I always love to see the buds and fruits coming on! I'm sure the rain helped a lot! Your little container garden is doing well!
Ooh! Nice! I have just this year planted my first patio vegetable plants- can't really call 2 tomato plants and a garlic a garden, right?- and I'm so excited. I'm a little worried that they won't thrive in this dreary English weather. We'll see. I might need to set up a mini greenhouse.

Hey, go ahead and call it a garden, Reese!:) You've got to start somewhere, right? This year: pots on the patio. Next year: raised beds!!
We got a lot of rain last week and all the trees leaves came out so green & pretty!

I grow everything in pots ...even a fig tree!

My first thought when I saw the title of your post was, "What is she going to do when she moves?" I'm no help there. I can only tell you what to box up, and I don't think these would box too well. :)

We've had some rain up here, but we are just starting to green up a little. Some trees have small leaves, and some trees still have buds only. It's just such a brand new thing for me, Lora. I'm such a Southern girl that I'm out of my element. I'm actually wearing a mock turtleneck today! It's May 13th for goodness sakes!

So greening up here, not so much yet, but it's on the way. Before you know it, it's going to be fall. Almost makes me a little giggly. I guess I'll get used to it eventually. I'd never trade the blue skies here though. I know it sounds strange, but they are more blue here than anywhere I've lived before, and now that winter's pretty much over, they are back to that pretty blue.

I'm amazed that you have a fig tree in a pot! We have one in our yard here...maybe I should plant a cutting in a pot and take it with me!

That does sound like a long time to wait for Spring! I remember growing up in OH, I can't tell you how many times we woke up to snow flurries on Easter Sundays:)
I'm planning on moving my pots of plants, so hopefully it'll go well. At least it'll be good blog fodder, right?! lol!

The Reading Game: A Review

I was excited to receive this review product recently, thinking my 1st-grade-son could really benefit and enjoy it a lot. And I was right! He is having so much fun with this game. The Reading Game is a fast-paced memory card game using words. The game comes with 6 sets of memory cards with 6 corresponding readers. The idea is for you and your student to play memory with each set of cards (playing 6 rounds with each set), after every 2 rounds your student then reads 2 test sentences to see how he is retaining the new words he is learning. After the whole set has been played, he is then ready to read the corresponding reader...and has learned 30 new words! By the time your student has played every set of cards and read every reader, he will have learned 180 words. Of the 25 most common English words, 23 are on that list; of the 50 most common words, 42 are on that list. So this little game of reading really does prepare your student well. The readers are illustrated with cute ...

The Making of an Egyptian Death Mask

We are learning all about the ancient world this year with Story of the World I and loving it! We've been learning a lot about Egypt, of course, which is completely fascinating. Most recently we have studied the New Kingdom of Egypt, which includes the story of King Tut. So we decided making an Egyptian death mask in the style of King Tut's would be a fun project. First since it was too cold at the time to paper mache in the garage (it probably would have frozen instead of dried-ha) and it was too messy to do it in the house, we decided to pick up a couple of cheap craft masks at Hobby Lobby. Next we cut out cardboard shapes to complete the shape of the death mask, attaching them with hot glue. Vince even put a little detail on the *beard* with the hot glue per The Princess' request. Then the kiddos started to paint them with this metallic gold tempera paint. It worked okay for the cardboard, but would not coat the plastic of the mask. We thought maybe a second coat ...

Door Hanger Chore Charts

My kids have had a chore chart for a while.  It's one of those magnetic boards and they share it.  However, it's not by their rooms and often they (and I) forget to update it.  Plus it's a little bulky.   When I saw the concept of a door hanger chore chart on Pinterest, I loved it!  It was compact, right there were the kiddos could see it coming out and going into their rooms, and it costs almost nothing to make.   I headed over to one of my favorite stores: Hobby Lobby, of course.  They  have these little wooden door hangers for .79.  I also grabbed a couple of packets of decorative buttons for $1.99 each.  I already had the clothes pins and the paint so those cost me nothing.   I began by painting the door hangers (I used tempera paints because that's what I had).  Then I grabbed a fine point Sharpie and the clothes pins and started writing chores on them, making sure to write them correctly so they will ...
