The Big Reveal

Yea!! We finally got the kiddos' desks repainted! The school/play room is ready for school now. Good thing, too, since we start on Monday:)


We decided on black paint for the metal bases of the desks, but we wanted to get some input from the kiddos on the wooden seats and backs. So we gave them the colors from this set of vintage books to choose from.
The Princess chose blue and Mr. B chose green. I thought that was funny since The Princess has a green room and Mr. B's is blue. The desktops are painted with chalkboard paint. The chalkboard on the wall also got a fresh coat of paint.

I also repainted their table and chair set. It has been used more that I could have ever imagined and had so many crayon marks and scratches on it. Plus I needed an excuse to paint something red!
You should have seen me painting this set in the backyard when our neighbors white dog jumped over the fence to come and play. Talk about pandemonium! LOL

So I think we're just about ready to start school on Monday. Not that I have any delusions that they are going to sit at these desks all day and do school work. I'm sure we'll be all over the house at times, but I'm looking forward to it!
(How do you think my state plates turned out around the top of the room? I like them!)

Everything looks great! I love how the desks look brand new, but have that retro feel. There's nothing like that anticipation of school starting! I bet the kiddos are excited!

The desks look adorable, but I love the red table. Red is second only to blue for me.

Desks never cut it at our house, but when the kids were younger we never had a dedicated school room and ours weren't that cute. We usually take up the school room and the table we eat on. It could also be that I have more kids and we need to spread out more for separation sometimes...not really sure. I'd have the desks just because they were cute and I liked them though! :)

I got one of the desks several years ago from a friend and the other from throw-away stuff at a church. They aren't identical, but I kind of like it that way:)

Everything looks fresh and clean and GREAT! I have an old barrel belly school desk that needs repainting and now I feel inspired to get it done :0)
Here's wishing you a very happy and successful school year. My youngest kids begin their school year on Monday too. Today we are going to "meet the teacher" and get class assignments :0)

isn't it amazing what a little paint can do?!? love the idea of chalkboard paint on the tops of them. i may just be stealing that one! we aren't technically homeschooling yet, but i have started to teach lily how to read/write...just nothing formal!

The Reading Game: A Review

I was excited to receive this review product recently, thinking my 1st-grade-son could really benefit and enjoy it a lot. And I was right! He is having so much fun with this game. The Reading Game is a fast-paced memory card game using words. The game comes with 6 sets of memory cards with 6 corresponding readers. The idea is for you and your student to play memory with each set of cards (playing 6 rounds with each set), after every 2 rounds your student then reads 2 test sentences to see how he is retaining the new words he is learning. After the whole set has been played, he is then ready to read the corresponding reader...and has learned 30 new words! By the time your student has played every set of cards and read every reader, he will have learned 180 words. The Making of an Egyptian Death Mask

We are learning all about the ancient world this year with Story of the World I and loving it! We've been learning a lot about Egypt, of course, which is completely fascinating. Most recently we have studied the New Kingdom of Egypt, which includes the story of King Tut. So we decided making an Egyptian death mask in the style of King Tut's would be a fun project. First since it was too cold at the time to paper mache in the garage (it probably would have frozen instead of dried-ha) and it was too messy to do it in the house, we decided to pick up a couple of cheap craft masks at Hobby Lobby. Next we cut out cardboard shapes to complete the shape of the death mask, attaching them with hot glue. Vince even put a little detail on the *beard* with the hot glue per The Princess' request. Door Hanger Chore Charts

My kids have had a chore chart for a while.  It's one of those magnetic boards and they share it.  However, it's not by their rooms and often they (and I) forget to update it.  Plus it's a little bulky.   When I saw the concept of a door hanger chore chart on Pinterest, I loved it!  It was compact, right there were the kiddos could see it coming out and going into their rooms, and it costs almost nothing to make.   I headed over to one of my favorite stores: Hobby Lobby, of course.  They  have these little wooden door hangers for .79.  I also grabbed a couple of packets of decorative buttons for $1.99 each.  I already had the clothes pins and the paint so those cost me nothing.   I began by painting the door hangers (I used tempera paints because that's what I had).  Then I grabbed a fine point Sharpie and the clothes pins and started writing chores on them, making sure to write them correctly so they will clip on the right direction.   The left
