Reading Eggs: A Review

Being on The Old Schoolhouse Homeschool Crew this year has been such a blessing, especially when it comes to tools to help my son with his reading.  My son is in 1st grade and is just really discovering the joys of reading.  Last year he did very well as we dived into his first readers, but readers can get old after a while.  That's why I've been thrilled to find some fun and exciting programs to encourage Mr. B with his reading skills.  The most recent product we've had the opportunity to try is Reading Eggs.

Reading Eggs is an online program that "focuses on a core reading curriculum of phonics and sight words using skills and strategies essential for sustaining reading success".  It has great animation, fun reading games, songs and rewards.  It is designed for ages 4-8, beginning at the very basics so that a child doesn't need to be reading at all in order to start this program.

The Stepping Stone Reading Lessons start page--
students can see their progress here.

The Stepping Stone Reading Lessons are where your student will begin at Reading Eggs.  Each lesson builds on the last one, building skills in five key areas: phonemic awareness and phonics, sight words, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.  There are different starting points in this program for your child which will be determined by their current reading level.  You can read more about the lessons here.

Reading Eggs now offers 100 lessons for your early reader.  Each lessons ends with rewards for your kiddos.  That's always great motivation!  After each 10 lessons your child will have a mastery quiz to take and then Reading Eggs will email you, the parent, the results and give you an update on how your student is doing on the site.

Reading Eggs had been a big hit at our house with Mr. B!  I have incorporated it into this daily reading and grammar lessons and he can hardly wait to get on the computer to do his lessons.  Throughout this year, his reading skills have really taken off and I love programs such as this one that encourage those skills and help him realize just how much fun reading is!

You can check out some sample lessons here and Reading Eggs also offers a FREE 2-week trial membership to their site.

Reading Eggs offers 12-month, 6-month or monthly memberships.  The 12-month plan is $75, the 6-month plan is $49.95 or you can choose to pay by the month for $9.95.  Reading Eggs also offers book packs to go along with their online membership and there is special pricing for these when you purchase your membership.

If you're looking for a fun and solid way to introduce your little one to reading or for a great way to encourage your early reader in their skills, you should definitely head over to Reading Eggs and see what they have to offer.
