Grandma's Macaroni & Cheese

Grandma's Macaroni & Cheese
  1. cook macaroni in salted boiling water; drain
  2. add cubed cheese (cheddar, Colby, whatever you like)
  3. add butter and stir all till cheese & butter is melted
  4. add a little milk if mixture is too dry
  5. season with salt & pepper (or add Cajun seasoning, like me!)
  6. stir mixture well and pour into a baking dish
  7. sprinkle shredded cheese on top
  8. bake @ 350F until just light brown on top

My grandma was never one for written recipes. She just cooked from memory most of the time. Sadly, dementia has robbed her of that and she doesn't remember how to cook at all now. She turned 90 this year though! She has had a long, wonderful life and has been blessed with a huge family: 7 children, 15 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren!

I was tagged this week by Nihal to post the 4th picture from the 4th folder on my computer and when I was looking that up tonight it turned out to be one of my grandma with some of her children.

Yum...homemade mac & cheese...one of the best comfort foods, huh! I love recipes that are handed down like this....they mean so much! I have a few that say 'pinch of this' or 'keep adding flour until'... Sweet picture of the ladies! :)
I love some mac and cheese. Avery eats it EVERY day. Yes, is that goofy or what? She loves it and is so fussy about what she eats. I think someday she'll change, but for now it's a steady diet of mac and cheese. Your family looks so sweet. That doesn't surprise me though. I'm sorry about the dementia. I got to see an aunt and two uncles in August. I hadn't seen them in years and it was so uplifting. Neat post!

I don't have too many handed-down recipes, but one is our main dish at Christmas. I love reading about your relationship with your grandma. It reminds me a little bit of mine (she turned 93 this year) and she is not able to cook for herself and doesn't usually remember much. I guess you'd call it a little bit of dementia due to old age, but she's able to stay in her own home with someone always with her. We're thankful for that right now.

On a completely unrelated note, did you do a post earlier this year about tea? I seem to remember that you posted a picture of your tea tins and blogged about it. It may have been someone else, but I am just picturing it here. The reason I ask is that I have some specific questions about making tea without bags. I like to drink tea at night (coffee is in the earlier part of the day usually and only occasionally at night). I thought if it was you that you might be able to help.

The only mac and cheese I'll eat! =) That was a good day for Grandma--her birthday. She kept reminding everyone that she was 90 now. =)

That mac and cheese looks so good! I like that receipe since it seems that a lot of them have sour cream in them and I don't like sour cream. :)

The Making of an Egyptian Death Mask

We are learning all about the ancient world this year with Story of the World I and loving it! We've been learning a lot about Egypt, of course, which is completely fascinating. Most recently we have studied the New Kingdom of Egypt, which includes the story of King Tut. So we decided making an Egyptian death mask in the style of King Tut's would be a fun project. First since it was too cold at the time to paper mache in the garage (it probably would have frozen instead of dried-ha) and it was too messy to do it in the house, we decided to pick up a couple of cheap craft masks at Hobby Lobby. Next we cut out cardboard shapes to complete the shape of the death mask, attaching them with hot glue. Vince even put a little detail on the *beard* with the hot glue per The Princess' request. Then the kiddos started to paint them with this metallic gold tempera paint. It worked okay for the cardboard, but would not coat the plastic of the mask. We thought maybe a second coat

Door Hanger Chore Charts

My kids have had a chore chart for a while.  It's one of those magnetic boards and they share it.  However, it's not by their rooms and often they (and I) forget to update it.  Plus it's a little bulky.   When I saw the concept of a door hanger chore chart on Pinterest, I loved it!  It was compact, right there were the kiddos could see it coming out and going into their rooms, and it costs almost nothing to make.   I headed over to one of my favorite stores: Hobby Lobby, of course.  They  have these little wooden door hangers for .79.  I also grabbed a couple of packets of decorative buttons for $1.99 each.  I already had the clothes pins and the paint so those cost me nothing.   I began by painting the door hangers (I used tempera paints because that's what I had).  Then I grabbed a fine point Sharpie and the clothes pins and started writing chores on them, making sure to write them correctly so they will clip on the right direction.   The left

1st Day Back to {home}School, Among Other Things

We did it! We finally got unpacked enough and got our new learning room organized enough to start back to school! Frankly, I was starting to get worried...ha Today went very well though. So far I am extremely pleased with our new curriculum choices for math and language arts. Now, if I could just actually get some lesson planning done... And get the finishing touches done in the learning room, so I can blog it! In other news, it has been a bit of a traumatic week...pet-wise. Last weekend a sweet friend (who had asked my permission beforehand) brought the kiddos their very own little fish tank with two goldfish. Well, on Sunday we noticed that The Princess' fish was pretty lethargic...dead, actually. She was sad, but she handled it fairly well. And we went to the store that evening and let her pick out a new goldfish. Well, today during our school time~the fish tank is in our learning room~we noticed Mr. B's fish was acting funny. And then he was dead. It was a
